Muy triste e innecesario lo que acaba de suceder con Bill Ward. ¿Realmente tiene sentido negarle el trato económico que merece y privar a los fans de una última reunión de la formación original al completo?

Una lástima. Y a pesar de ello, si el disco es la mitad de bueno que “The Devil You Know”, merecerá la pena escucharlo, pero es una pena que la carrera de Black Sabbath termine así.

Esta es una semana totalmente Riot para mí.

Ahora precisamente que esta sección se ha llenado de mensajes a favor y en contra de la piratería, tiene sentido hablar de todas esas maravillosas reediciones de discos clásicos que podemos disfrutar de un tiempo a esta parte.

No sé cuántos seguidores de Riot quedarán en este mundo, pero es una banda que a mí siempre me gustó de una manera especial.

Les descubrí cuando tocaron en el primer Monsters of Rock de Donington Park, en 1980, junto a Rainbow, Scorpions, Saxon, Judas Priest y April Wine. Evidentemente no estuve allí, aún era demasiado joven para vivir la experiencia de un festival británico de Heavy Metal, pero les escuché por primera vez en el disco en directo de ese Monsters.

Recientemente he comprado la bonita reedición que hizo el sello Rock Candy del mejor álbum del grupo, “Narita” y eso es lo que ha sonado a menudo en mi cutre-aparato hi fi en los últimos días, junto a discos del año pasado que aún saboreo a diario, como ese fantástico “Bad Ingredients” de Scott H. Biram o el igualmente recomendable “Dirty Jeans and Mudslide Hymns” de John Hiatt.

Si alguno de vosotros es fan del Heavy Metal clásico y nunca ha escuchado “Narita”, debería hacerse con él hoy mismo.

Millones de internautas encolerizados… ¿Cómo ha podido suceder semejante cosa? La posibilidad de que algún día tengan que pagar de nuevo por la música y las películas que consumen, les parece inadmisible.

Duff McKagan lo dijo bien claro ayer en su columna del Seattle Weekly: “¿Dónde estabais todos vosotros cuando la piratería empezó a diezmar la industria de la música? Esos discos gratis os hacían sentir bien, ¿eh?”.

He usado Megaupload como cualquiera y sin embargo hoy no estoy de luto. Me duele más ver cómo cierran mis tiendas de discos favoritas y cómo malviven algunos de los músicos que admiro.

A continuación, la columna completa de Duff. Si alguno de vosotros tiene tiempo de traducirla para que la puedan leer quienes no dominan el inglés, adelante. Todo lo que dice Duff en su artículo son verdades como puños, de la primera a la última frase.

“Sitting in my usual chair, watching my usual a.m. updates on CNN’s Headline News, Wednesday morning, I, like every other American tuned in to at least one form of media, was inundated with verbiage about anti-piracy legislation known as PIPA and SOPA.

The legislation’s meant to combat theft of creative works like movies and music from overseas web sites. But when I turned to the Twitter and Facebook, I saw an overwhelming dog pile of support against the bills. Excuse me, but where were you all when piracy started to decimate the music industry? Why didn’t you take a stand against that? Those free records felt good, huh?

The fury from the Internet class is that the broad language in the pieces of legislation will be bad for start-ups, might prevent the next YouTube, or give the government the ability to take down a whole site because of one link to copyrighted works. In short, they’re opposed to the legislation because they think it will be bad for the Internet business.

Bad for business. Anti-piracy legislation could be bad for the Internet business. It almost takes my breath away. Internet piracy has claimed half of the recorded music business, and made the prospect of making a living as a musician harder for artists of all rank and file. Why didn’t Google, or Facebook, or Wikipedia ever stand in solidarity with musicians, actors, and writers – most of whom have never known fame and fortune – as their works were stolen with no recourse on their sites?

Where are the “fans,” the lovers of music? Why have they never stood up and taken a stand for the men and women in front of and behind the microphone? Yes, yes, this is all boring, right? It’s typical that the “rich rock guy” would be spouting from his golden pulpit. But let me tell you something, the working stiffs at recording studios and record stores that have had to close thanks to rampant internet piracy never were rich, but they are out of a job.

Are people really actually pissed off because Wikipedia is going “black” for a day? Because people feel that their First Amendment rights are really being threatened? Or is it because they’re afraid of losing free access to Deadwood and the Black Keys? Or are they worried that the next YouTube won’t be able to build a business model off the unwitting investment of copyrighted material that users uploaded for free while investors and start-ups glibly proclaimed that they couldn’t be responsible for actions users took? Wikipedia has thousands of volunteers and brags that they keep the site’s content accurate. Why can’t they regulate more rigorously for copyright violation, too? Too much of a bother?

Should the government be able to shut down Facebook because one user posts a link to copyrighted content? Of course not. But should Facebook and Google do a better job monitoring – and stop profiteering off- their users’ access to illegal content? Absolutely. And, you know what, they’re smart enough to figure it out.

When it comes to creative industries, we’re not talking in the hypothetical. Recording studios all around the world have had to close. So have record stores. Movie studios have suffered. Many, many jobs have been lost. Many peoples’ livelihoods have been affected. The people who make or who have made money from record sales are not the “bad guy,” the pirater and the stealer are. Period. So, where’s the public outcry?

As a practicing musician who has seen his industry turned upside down, and see how piracy has hurt every artist from chart-toppers to indie start-ups, this PIPA upheaval is a slap in the face.

If, as the claim goes, the social media masses were able to overturn the regime in Egypt, they can certainly turn the tide on Internet piracy”.

Fue una agradable sorpresa ver a Johnny Winter en el show de David Letterman esta semana.

Lo habitual es que este tipo de “talk shows” masivos sólo presten atención a grupos jóvenes de moda o a grandes estrellas mainstream, así que se agradece el detalle.

Esta es otra de las canciones rescatadas del pasado que aparecen en el disco de Van Halen.

La banda escribió “She’s the Woman” en los 70′s y quienes hayáis seguido a Van Halen durante todos estos años, probablemente la conocéis. La demo original de la canción se ha publicado en bootlegs varias veces.

Hoy he iniciado mi día escuchando este viejo tema de Guns N’Roses, cantado por Duff McKagan, que increíblemente nunca llegó a ser editado oficialmente. Tan sólo hemos podido disfrutarlo en versión demo, sin el grupo al completo y en una grabación muy precaria. Calculo que debo haber pasado ya 22 años escuchando esta canción (!).

Ahora que se habla tanto de los antiguos temas que Van Halen han aprovechado para su nuevo disco, es inevitable pensar en todas esas canciones de los Guns que quedaron perdidas en el túnel del tiempo.

Ni que decir tiene que la canción que elegí hoy para seguir con mi pequeña sesión G N’R, fue la siguiente. Una de las mejores composiciones en las que colaboró el tristemente desaparecido West Arkeen.

Lo que está sucediendo con el retorno de Van Halen es curioso. Fans de toda la vida emocionados con el nuevo single, otros fans de toda la vida proclamando que el tema en cuestión es mediocre y que el disco será una enorme decepción, gente irritadísima porque la banda ha recuperado varios temas de su primera época para su nueva obra (algo que, por otra parte, han hecho siempre a lo largo de su carrera), en lugar de basar el disco únicamente en nuevas composiciones, individuos molestos por las bambas que lleva Eddie en el video (!)…

La noticia del día hace referencia a la portada del álbum. Como podéis ver, la carátula de “A Different Kind of Truth” está claramente inspirada en la portada del viejo disco de The Commodores, “Movin’ On”, así que los “haters” tendrán más motivos ahora para cargar contra VH.

En fin… Van Halen han regresado y yo me siento feliz. Cuento los días hasta que tenga oportunidad de verles en directo.
