I love the song “Hurdy Gurdy Man” by Donovan. I think it’s one of the most haunting and original pop songs ever. Never fails to bring a tear to my eye.
But I also love the Butthole Surfers’ cover. It’s so wrong: Gibby Haynes’s snotty mockery of Donovan’s quavering voice, taking his earnest ’60′s eastern spirituality and tossing it on the barbecue like a cheap hotdog.
A disrespectful but irresistible tribute. It kind of reminds me of my dilemma as a comedian: I want to be a good person, but it’s just so much fun being an asshole.
