Hi! I’m Rachel and I was born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I was a comedian in Austin, L.A., and NYC before moving to Barcelona in 2004. I’ve continued my comedy career in Spain, but now in Spanish. Bad Spanish. Besides my comedy shows, I have another show in Madrid and Barcelona called Anti-Karaoke.
This blog gives me a place to talk about my day-to-day life as an expat living in Barcelona, the culture clashes, the travels I’m lucky to enjoy as an artist in Spain, as well as remember things from my “past life” in the U.S. And sometimes I write opinion pieces that get me into trouble with some of my readers. (If there’s anything people hate, it’s an American telling them what to do.)
One problem I sometimes have with this blog is its focus. I’m writing for the readers in my adopted country as well as people in the U.S. who share the same culture as I do. So sometimes it might seem that I’m explaining obvious things, depending on where in the world you live and what language you speak. Just keep that in mind and bear with me.
On a side note: My very first contacts with anyone from Spain were with — funny enough — two writers: the author Ramón Buenaventura, who mentioned my CD on his blog, and Cesar Martín, who interviewed me for Popular 1 in 2002.
So it’s really because of Popular 1 that I live in Spain today. I love this magazine not only for the talent, but also the personality, integrity, “heart”, and independent spirit contained in its pages. I will always be grateful to Popular 1 for changing my life in such a positive way.
Thanks for reading, and feel free to leave your comments.
Vaya con Dios.
-Rachel
