Hi. I am Rachel. I am a U.S. expat, born and raised in Milwaukee. I was a comedian in Austin, L.A., and NYC before moving to Barcelona in 2004.
My very first contacts with anyone from Spain was with — funny enough — two writers: the author Ramón Buenaventura, who mentioned my CD on his blog, and Cesar Martín, who interviewed me for Popular 1 in 2002.
So it’s really because of Popular 1 that I live in Spain today. I love this magazine not only for the talent, but also the personality, integrity, “heart”, and independent spirit contained in its pages. I will always be grateful to Popular 1 for changing my life in such a positive way.
After I immigrated in 2004 to the opposite side of the world, my life split into two parts: before, in the old country, and after, in the new. Having my life split into Past U.S.A. / Present Spain has been at turns stressful, exhiliarating, depressing, confusing, hilarious, demoralizing, terrifying, ridiculous, overwhelming, and inspiring. Sometimes I feel like the first three decades of my life were just a dream.
Now about this blog: it’s not strictly about music, or movies, or any other field of pop culture. It’s more about my personal experiences living here, and remembering there. I will try to write frequently and entertainingly.
One problem I’m having with this blog in general is its focus. I’m directing it towards readers in my adopted country, Spain, as well as people in the U.S., who share the same culture as I do. So sometimes it might seem silly because I end up explaining obvious things, depending on where in the world you live and what language you speak. Just keep that in mind and bear with me. Thanks for reading, and feel free to leave your comments.
Vaya con Dios.
-Rachel
